Diana Armfield born in 1920 is known as not only a painter but also for her early wallpaper and textile designs. Landscape is the major subject in her work.

“The Vinehouse, France”  2000

Oil 7.75×9.5 inches

This painting is a very abstract view of  what looks like a country landscape. The paint has been applied very gesturally so when u look up close it just looks like random colours, but from far away you can see the full picture. There are trees and bush in the forground, with a house in the middle and a bright blue sky at the top of the image.

I included this painting in my exhibition because i really like the way the colours all blend together making the landscape hard to make out and blurred.

“Penelope Road”  2009

This work is a pathway through a garden of  bright flowers, it feels as though you are surrounded by the vibrant colours of the landscape. Maughan uses these bright colour palettes to emphasize his works are a painting not just illustrations, because although they are related to nature, they are not natural. This is particularly effective in this painting with the dark reds in the foreground. There is a sense of perspective, pulling the eye towards the centre of the image.

“Speedy Road” 2009

This painting is looking at a far away landscape through a garden of bright colourful flowers, there is an array of  bobbing flowerheads at the top and flat lowlands on the otherside of an estuary.

I included these two paintings in my exhibition because i love the bright colours that have been used, these make them seem more surreal because they are not realistic.

“A Pair of Godwits”

The full title of the original monoprint is “A Pair of Godwits flew over the Harbour entrance”. This monoprint was reproduced to accompany the 2007 exhibition “To the harbour” . The content of this work is a New Zealand coast landscape, there are hills and islands surrounded by the ocean. In the sky in the foreground are two seagulls flying through the air.

I included this painting in my exhibition because even though it isn’t as much of a surreal landscape i like the colours used because they are made more brighter than they really would be.

“Annunciation”  1961 

This painting is one of Klarweins most recognised works. There is alot going on in this image, with many different objects and images combined. The content is of a coloured woman posing to the right of the frame, there is alot of colour, and flowers around her. To the left is some fruit and a building, with people standing in front, and in the background is a landscape, with a sun in the sky.

I included this painting in my exhibition because it also fits into the surreal landscape theme, even though it isn’t as landscape based there is still some in the image with random objects throughout.

In this works Owen’s uses subdued natural hues, it is an airy forest scene with the content of tree branches growing from abstract colours floating in the sky, there are also plants growing from the bottom left corner. This work clings to dreamy visions of beauty that mix visual elements.

I included this image in my exhibition because it fits into the them of surreal landscapes, i like that it has random things placed throughout the painting.

The context of Gerhard Richter’s work “Dead 1, 2 and 3 (Tote 1, 2 and 3) 1988” is taken from the 1980’s when he painted these three works as alternately sized versions of the same source photo. The image is the dead body of Ulrike Meinhof who hung herself in her prison cell in 1976 and represent an event that influenced a whole series of Richter’s work. The subject of these new paintings was unlike anything he’d addressed before, because his new theme was the controversial lives and deaths of four German social activists turned terrorists this caught people off guard and stirred Germany.

Globalism in art to me means how different people in the world are connected through different communication technology and our exposure to other cultures.

It is about transport, technology, communication, pop culture and global economy and how these influence different cultures.

Janet Lilo explores globalism in art through making differnt videos of people from different backgrounds an cultures coming together by all singing the same 2 songs.

KERRY JOHN ANDREWS

Kerry John Andrews main concern for his work is to explore the idea of translation, he works with various media including installation, digital imaging, drawin, sound and music. I chose to look at this artist because it relates to my theme of music and i like some of the colours he uses.

Andrew McLeods work is notable for its sheer inventiveness and the variety of image and subject matter. Most of his works on paper are digi-pigmented inkjet prints overlaid with gouache. I like these images because of the surrealism of them. Also i like how the opposite kind of objects that you wouldn’t usually see together have been put in the same image.

“I am intrigued by the long shot, the notion that human aspirations that seem impossible could actually come to pass, in spite of their improbability. Recent work has been particularly influenced by the longing and desire for transcendence in contemporary life. In my recent series, “Likely Stories,” I allude to these ideas in pigment prints constructed from multiple images into alternative realities. In these pieces, solitary airborne objects function as mirrored, one-on-one stand-ins or surrogates for the viewer. These iconic symbols are everyday objects, like balloons, toys and hats – diminutive objects taming the infinite. Some are inflated, others in the act of deflating – metaphors for breathing. Whether free-floating or propelled by a toss, they are poised on the cusp between triumph and disaster as they ascend to improbable, transcendent heights. In full throttle can-do mode, they are wryly reflective of the humor and pathos of the desire for human achievement.” – Barbara Noah

Barbara Noah is a mixed-media artist with experience in painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking, public art, installations and digital imaging. I like the first image because of the colours and textures of the image, i also like the second one because it looks so unreal and i like the earth as a background.

3 WEEK DRAWING WORKSHOPS

PHOTOGRAPHIC DRAWING

This image is my favourite that came out of  the photographic drawing workshop, we had to divide the space we were looking at into lots of sections and take a series of photos. I think it turned out looking really effective!

MECHANICAL DRAWING

In the mechanical drawing workshop we had to trace images in a number of different ways, I like how it turned out looking like a collage of really different pictures.

LINE DRAWING

One of the tasks for this workshop was to find images and arrange them in a way that emphasized line using different media, colours and textures. I really like how this turned out because i like collage and think the colouring and lines make it look really effective.
